Admiral Lord Nelson’s decisive victory over the combined fleets of France and Spain in battle off Cape Trafalgar on 21 October 1805 arguably remains the greatest military naval triumph in history. After a six-month game of cat and mouse across the Atlantic, 27 British ships engaged a Franco-Spanish force of 33 ships. Abandoning the rulebook, which dictated that fleets should engage each other in parallel lines, Nelson instead chose to split his fleet into two divisions which then sailed at right angles to the Franco-Spanish column. Led by Nelson’s flagship Victory and Admiral Collingwood’s Royal Sovereign respectively, the British columns broke the enemy line in two places. This tactic – the ‘Nelson Touch’ – prevented the front third of the Franco-Spanish fleet from engaging and brought on a general engagement with the remainder. In a five-hour battle, superior British seamanship and gunnery resulted in the capture of 18 enemy ships. The rest fled but only 11 succeeded in reaching safety in Cadiz. Nelson’s great victory secured British naval dominance for the next century but was won at the cost of the life of the great admiral himself, shot down by a marksman in the fighting tops of the French Redoubtable. His country thought it a heavy price to pay.
